Many of you are familiar with some of the important herbal and nutraceutical supplements I recommend during allergy season because we have used them together for years AND they are also very important for COVID prevention.
On the topic of Allergy Prevention, did you know that 40 million Americans suffer from seasonal challenges every year? As so many of my patients can attest to…YOU don’t have to be one of them! You can thank histamine for a large proportion of the allergic response. Once released by our Mast Cells, Histamine wreaks havoc! Histamine is released from mast cells in response to an allergy trigger as a part of your immune system located in the cells of your skin, lungs, nose/sinuses, mouth, gut, and blood. Once released, histamine causes inflammation and dilated blood vessels to recruit chemicals from your immune system to step in and do repair work. Mucous production as well as vasodilation with redness and upper and/or lower airway restriction/congestion and mucous membrane itching are the byproduct of this repair work. Yes, histamine is a part of your immune defense system, but the issue is that an Allergic Person is considered Hypersensitive to their environment and as a result the mast cells 1) release too much histamine and 2) release histamine for too long, leading to but not limited to, the plethora of possible allergy symptoms:
- Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth
- Runny, stuffy nose
- Head congestion and sinus pain/fullness
- Throat pain
- Ear pain and fullness/popping
- Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)
- wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and a cough
The Allergy Prevention Program has a blend of bioflavanoids, antioxidants, proteolytic enzymes and botanicals which synergistically augment each other’s strength so that together, they provide comprehensive support for seasonal challenges caused by common environmental allergens.
To highlight the KEY PLAYERS in my program:
Quercetin has strong antioxidant activity and has been shown to support immune health by mediating the release of inflammatory compounds including leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Quercetin is known for its ability to stabilize mast cells, diminishing the release of histamine, the compound known to cause hypersensitivity reactions during seasonal changes.
Stinging Nettles Leaf Extract
Stinging nettles leaf is a plant that has been shown to balance immune response, specifically in the airways and nasal passages. Studies have shown that the extract of stinging nettles leaf balances a variety of inflammatory activities that affect respiratory health.
Bromelain is a plant enzyme naturally found on the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant. Bromelain is a proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzyme that has been shown to reduce circulating allergenic protein complexes associated with hyper-immune sensitivity and seasonal discomfort. It also has been shown to enhance the absorption of quercetin.
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid precursor to one of the most important antioxidants in the body, glutathione. Both glutathione and NAC help reduce the viscosity of the mucus allowing for clearing of the airways and improved respiratory health.
Vitamin C cannot be synthesized by humans and is therefore an essential nutrient that must be consumed in the diet. Among its numerous health-promoting properties, vitamin C is an essential vitamin that supports the immune system and is also a potent antioxidant. When the body is under a significant amount of stress, vitamin C is excreted rapidly. Vitamin C has many immune boosting properties, but is distinctively beneficial for individuals with seasonal discomfort because of its ability to deactivate histamine.
